Ramirez's Senior Internship

Throughout the past week and over the course of the holidays and Thanksgiving I didnt do as much since most businesses are off work and there is limits means. I did however go over all the opportunities once more with the link given to me by Sarah Owen and called all the businesses that I still had not heard back from, from the first time I did the assignment. I did this as a second time to touch base with them once more. Some I did not hear back from and some I was fortunate to get a hold of and update and edit their information on the website. Over the past several weeks I learned alot on how businesses run and I feel it will help in the near fututre especially with graduating.

Ramirez's Senior Internship

Over the past week my internship has consisted of a lot of research and investigation. I had the duty of researching 2010 events for our students including myself because it is always important in this type of field to research events because we are always needing to volunteer, help, and work these events for experience and of course to fulfill our community hours. Therefore I have created a list for my proffessor of various events you can possibly in the future work for, intern and volunteer. I have to say the research was quite difficult being November and most websites wont have the complete info on dates and events this early so my options are limited. I also read everyones internship blog and website and found three peoples that I found that I felt were very interesting and what defined a true internship. Overall this past week I have sharpened my research skills and have gone beyond just the ordinary research.

Ramirez's Seniro Internship

Over the past week, I have done more tasks that I have learned from. I have had the opportunity to follow up with various businesses that are looking to post positions looking for interns for our students here involved at the school of community resource and development. They email me the posting and description and then add it on our web page. It gives the students including myself all of the updated information on the web page and with the economy getting a bit better than what it was, things are looking out for the better. I also finished my comprehensive research report depicitng all the strengths and weaknesses of this course as well as of the eupdate sent by Lynne Kincaid every two weeks. This assignment I learned alot and felt as if I gave an abundance of feedback back , to help better enhance the coursed as well as the eupdate. I feel as if I gained knowledge from this assignment because just like in any workplace there are times when this is needed.

Ramirez's Senior Internship

After the next several days I had a couple more assignments assigned to me that I had to do and I felt was important to write about. I had to create a thorough report detailing the e-update sent by Lynn Kinkade which discuss everything from internship opportunities to updates on volunteerism, to information on where you can find employment; basically its your all around guide to being a crd student. I wrote a report that discussed what needs improvement, what can be improved and what I feel are great resources for students and what brings value and what I feel is being used more than others. I feel this will definitely help the students as well as myself navigate through the page better and for those who haven't heard about the e-updates or who do not receive it whatever the case may be can be more educated on it. This task really helped me improve my analyzation skills, how I evaluate things, and data reconciliation skills. I am glad i am learning all of this that will only help shape my future.

Ramirez's Senior Internship

I havent posted anything in quite some time due to the fact that I needed immediate surgery on my hand. I am back on finally and although I do not have my old internship anymore at Desert Living Magazine (due to my surgery) I have learned a copious amount from that internship through the ups and the downs. I learned that in a magazine company you have to be precise in all you do and that you deal at times with people that aren't that pleasant and people that are absolutely amazing at what they do and good well rounded leaders. After healing and getting a bit better my advisor and I decided that it would be best that I continue my internship through her and assignments that are assigned to me each week. Already I have learned alot I feel as though. I already called ALL businesses and non profit organizations that are on the website http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=prqh3cufizjSGW3sNsrKXSQ , its the list that has all of the scrd internship opportunities. I called them and made sure their information was up to date and that if they found an intern or no longer need an intern than I can delete their posting. We all know that we love to see up to date information and it is a waste of time to call them and hear them say they already found an intern so in the long run this was to help us the students. So, go check out the page for updated info! Doing this my communication skills were put to the test because I spoke to each business and made sure they were aware I was their point of contact.

Ramirez's Senior Internship

Over the past week at my internship I ran quite a few errands. I had to deliver magazines all across town especially since my boss Jaime will be out of town all this week. I had to drop off magazines for an event called Taste of the Town which is a food and wine event this Friday that we are sponsoring, and I had to drop off magazines for a play being held at the Herberger Theatre that we are also sponsoring. In addition to that billing had to be done where we mailed out subscribers that their bill is due as well as some cleaning in the office and alot of meeting on what I have to do this week since Jaime is gone. It was pretty mellow for the most part, the events are kind of slow because of the economy but I did learn one thing, that's knowing how to manage being on a call in regard to an event we are holding at Barneys. The event is for all concierge of all hotels across Arizona and Desert Living is hosting it for them (a brunch). I had to call every hotel and remind them to rsvp because the deadline is approaching, I learned what to say and how to talk to them, I had never called concierge before or should I say never been put in that position to call them and remind them. I learned you have to be direct and firm and confident of what you are saying.

Ramirez's Senior Internship

Over the past weekend and week as mentioned in my previous posts I had been busy running errands all across town! Up to this day I have really enjoyed my internship and am learning so much as every day progresses. This past week I took some tips on writing from David Tyda our editor and I navigated through our new website it just actually launched its called Scoop Factory. If you ever have the chance and some free time feel free to go to desertlivingmag.com and click on scoop factory to subscribe it will give you an idea of what we do as a whole and what type of events we host and sponsor.
This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend an event called Its in the bag hosted by Womac (a women's organization in Scottsdale) and I took my mother along and it was basically a silent auction where proceeds go to the Phoenix Art Museum. They also had appetizers and drinks as well as live music. My job there although it was a fun event was to make sure the event had our logos on all the brochures, that they announced our name on the microphone, and that they presented our magazines in the goodie bag as well as put our magazine in their slide show. I also had to walk around and speak to the people that put on the event and make sure our duty as a sponsor was fulfilled. This week I am working on the billing for our customers as well as running a few more errands, which I will keep you updated in my future blogs. I also have learned alot more on sponsorship in general and the steps it takes for sponsors to come together and partner for events and so forth. I also had the opportunity to be in on a conference call with the director of events form the Phoenix Museum and how they discuss what events they want to be apart of together.
